"The journey is the reward."

Take a moment of retrospection and you will realize objects in mirror are closer than they appear. Those memories, or objects may seem to be closer than you think, easily grasped by a reaching hand or what may appear to be a recent memory.

Have you looked back on your own journey and been grateful for the blessings of people who you’ve come across?

Are you thankful for all opportunities presented to you and enjoyed moments to share with those closest to you and been able to appreciate the greatest gift of all – life?

Have you ever taken time to really reflect on your journey and what made it yours and yours alone to take?

Can you say you lived your life with no regret?

How often do you say you love your family and friends unconditionally as well as chase your dreams so your wishes can come true?

It’s when you can answer these questions, I feel you will have become the rare person who lived a life well and it’s only then you can impact and inspire others.

Reminiscing on my own life’s journey offers the mind a nostalgic trip down memory lane filled with sentimental stories yearning to be shared. The storyteller inside me enjoys sharing my journey as much as I enjoy writing of them. Each morning I awake and realize, I must choose how my day will be – good or not so good and to be thankful to blessed with yet another day. Occasionally, living life, dodging its many obstacles thrown and allowing others to set the tone and mood for my day requires me to stop, regroup and to take time out and reset before resuming life. It's all about not letting life interrupt you living your life. Perhaps, this is why we have fictional superheroes who can turn on their super human qualities to escape their mortal human sides.

I remind myself to not blink and not let another sun set without my taking time to share myself with family and lifelong friends, for they are the valued, priceless precious gifts in life. With each passing day, time seems to escape me, without much fanfare. I just wish I had more hours to spread myself out more often, as being there for each other is one of those gifts where returns are endless, in a positive manner, even though my time to share is not endless. I’d much sooner share memories, laugh at life, lend a shoulder to lean on and love unconditionally than to never have been given the chance to do so. Many close to tell me I often ways to put a positive spin on even the worst of circumstances and offer assurance when they face their darkest hours. Once the sun shines again and spreads its comforting warmth and time passes along, everything will be OK once again. That’s when I feel sharing my stories may bring me a catharsis, my faith will bring me comfort; while hoping my same stories may help another realize they’re not alone in their journey.

I share retrospection of myself, not as regrets in my life. I live my life with no regrets as I faithfully believe all happens at the right time, for the right reason and in the right season. How many times have you thought, something to the effect, if X didn’t happen in my life, I would have never experienced Y and met Z? Then through Z I was fortunate to have experienced A and had met B and C? Its like an axiomatic chain reaction set up with a bunch of dominoes set to fall through hairpin turns, traps, climbing steps and such until each tumbled domino falls and signifies a part of your journey. If I did live my life in regret, this blog may never have been written, I still wouldn’t be working at the YMCA 30 plus years later nor would have I completed post master’s course work nor would I have been able to have walked this incredible journey and met some of the amazing people who crossed my path I life.

This blog once started out as a suggestion by a past supervisor and lifelong friend suggested for me to share my experiences within in my YMCA career in my a way to seamlessly join my joy of writing with my storytelling skills. Over time, it has evolved from experiences in my career into amazing lessons learned, taking calculated risks and trusting my faith with a one-on-one relationship with God. Most importantly it has allowed me to be not only vulnerable to others, much like the feeling the Emperor in the donning his new clothes, when in reality he had just exposed his whole self to his subjects. Imagine if we all embarked on a journey. called life, in which we allowed ourselves and others to see truly how objects in the mirror are truly closer than they appear and take time to the be live each day as the gift given and not just let life itself get in the way of living.
